Additional information:

In general, most guests seem to appreciate their stay at Smugglers Cove St Lucia Resort and Spa. It ranks at #32 of 63 hotels in St. Lucia and #8 of 10 all-inclusive resorts in St. Lucia. I do find that 68% satisfaction rate is at a lower end, but if you add people who voted for this resort as average, then the satisfaction rate goes up to 86%.

People who didn’t have inflated expectations about this resort seem to be the most satisfied. This resort is positioned as a 3 star plus, but most reviewers indicate that it’s simply a solid 3 star property.

This resort is great for families as it offers a lot of activities, both for adults and the kids. Adults will enjoy an abundance of water and land sports, while their children will be very busy at one of the 3 Kids’ clubs that cater to children of all ages. Tip: make sure you book water-skiing no later than 08:30 am for a guaranteed place.

The resort’s management team has recently changed, and most guests indicate that the new management is doing a great job trying to put right a lot of wrong things inherited from  the previous owners.

Keep in mind that this is a very social  resort, where you have a chance to meet a lot of people not just from North America but also from Canada, the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe. If you like socializing with people from different countries, then you won’t be disappointed.

The grounds at Smugglers Cove St Lucia are very well kept, which is widely appreciated by all guests. The gardens are simply stunning, and one can tell how much effort has been put into maintaining such a high standard.

This is not a brand new resort, so many rooms do look somewhat tired and need to be renovated, particularly the bathrooms. However, there are some rooms that have been recently refurbished and guests who stayed in those rooms seem to be absolutely satisfied. Many reviews indicate that the 400′s rooms seem to be the ones that have been refurbished, therefore it would make sense to request one of these room while booking your stay at Smugglers Cove. These rooms are also close to all the amenities and the main buffet restaurant. One general complaint that stands out is that many rooms have ants, however not all of them, and it doesn’t seem to bother most of the guests. Remember, this is a general problem in the Caribbean – almost every resort will have insects in rooms, and unless it’s some sort of a serious infestation, it should not be a concern.

As we mentioned before, this is a very large resort, and there are rooms located uphill, which is a fair distance from the main resort area. If you are not prepared to spend time going up and down, or if you have kids, then you should probably book something closer to the beach or the pools. If, however, you want to enjoy some solitude and a spectacular view of the ocean and sunset, and don’t mind the exercise, then definitely book one of those rooms at the top of the hill. There is also a shuttle service that will transport you up and down.

Most vacationers find the food at Smugglers Cove to be simply delicious and amazing at all four restaurants, but Cafe Asia gets most of the great reviews. The Cove, resort’s main restaurant that serves the buffet style breakfast, lunch and dinner has a variety of food that can satisfy any taste, and it also offers a casual relaxed atmosphere. However, it’s in the open air and some guests don’t like the birds or the cats that always seem to be looking for food there. If you are put off by the birds or the cats, simply eat at one of the other three restaurants.

As far as the drinks concerned, the bar staff will be happy to mix you your favorite cocktail, and many guests do find something they like, including Jim Beam or Heineken on tap. On the downside, some drinks may be too sweet and weak, so make sure you ask for a double, if that’s a concern.

The pools are fine and well maintained but some guests think the management could do a better job cleaning them up. You will particularly appreciate the two adults-only pools as other pools may be loaded with too many kids. Most parents do think that the pools are awesome as well as the kids’ area and all the fun stuff.

Although the beach is small, the waters are normally calm, which is great for all sorts of non-motorized water activates or simply swimming. Again, calm waters are great for kids. There is plenty of shade under the palm trees, however, the beach itself could have used a few more umbrellas. Also, keep in mind, that all beaches in St. Lucia are public, so locals are permitted to hang around and they will try to sell stuff to you. Be prepared for that.

The nightly entertainment was OK for most guests, but nothing of the ordinary.

I was a bit surprised by the number of theft complaints, when phones and money have been stolen from guest rooms. This can definitely dampen your stay at Smugglers Cove St Lucia, so make sure you use the safe in your room to store all valuables. People who complained about things stolen, did acknowledge they did not lock them in the safe, but just left things in the room. While it is bothersome to know that things get stolen, I personally would always put everything valuable into the safe, including my documents, money or cell phone. I actually would not stay in the room if it doesn’t have a safe.

My overall impression is that Smugglers Cove St Lucia Resort and Spa is a very decent 3 star property, particularly if you book one of the refurbished rooms. It’s definitely great for kids as they will be occupied at least until 5 pm, while you could pamper yourself at the spa or enjoy a swim in the sea. As it’s located in the Northern part of the island, it’s close to the capital and many other attractions that you can visit, if you get bored at the resort. And, as the food is praised by most guests  as well as the number of available activities, you should not be disappointed.

The nearest airport , George F.L. Charles, is only 30 minutes away from the resort. Hewanora Airport (UVF) is actually on the South side of the island and is about 1h30 min away from the resort. The check-in time is at 3:00 pm, as is at the majority of the resorts in the Caribbean; the check-out is at 12:00 pm.

Unless you are planning to stay there for Christmas or New Year Holidays, there is a three night minimum stay required; for the Holiday season, you will be required to stay at least five nights, effective December 21, 2011 through January 2, 2012.
