The high season begins in December and runs through the middle of April. During the off-season, hotel rooms can be had for as little as half the high-season rates.

Accommodation in St. Maarten/St. Martin

The island is small, just 37-squre-mi, but very well developed and offers a wide range of accommodation. The Dutch side of the island offers larger resorts and time-shares; the more intimate properties are on the French side.

In general, there are a little over 80 resorts/hotels(inns) on the island, ranging from new modern developments (like the Radisson and the Westin St. Maarten) to some older low-priced alternatives (condos and small inns), with a lot of properties somewhere in between. On the Dutch side many resorts and hotels cater to groups, and although that’s also true to some extent on the French side, you can find a larger collection of intimate lodging there.

St Maarten All Inclusive Resorts

If you are looking for all inclusive resorts in St. Maarten, you probably will be disappointed. For some reason the island is not an all inclusive paradise like the Dominican Republic or Jamaica. These largest beachfront properties on St. Maarten/Sint Martin island are set on many acres of lush gardens, and offer a variety of accommodations and  activities. The all inclusive vacation packages include three daily meals and snacks during the day, unlimited fruit and soft drinks, beer and spirits, a mini-bar refreshed with soft drinks and bottled water daily, $20 in match bets for the onsite  Casinos, guest passes to the sister properties, live entertainment, fitness centres and endless water and land activities. These are affordable budget resort ideal for families, singles or couples looking for a relaxing day on a beach and energetic after-dark action at the disco club or the casino.

St. Martin Additional Info

Luckily for Americans, who make up the majority of vacationers to St. Maarten/St. Martin, English is the language spoken on both sides of the island. Dutch St Maarten may be particularly appealing to Americans as the prices are lower there, and big resorts have casinos and more nightlife in general.  Huge cruise ships bring hordes of shoppers into the Philipsburg shopping area and the area gets a bit congested at midmorning. But once you cross the unmarked border into the French side, you’ll find a bit of ambiance of the South France: quiet countryside, gourmet cuisine, and in Marigot, a walkable harbor area with plenty of outdoor cafes, markets, shopping and other activities.

St Martin resorts on both sides offer a touch of European culture in addition to a lot of laid-back Caribbean ambiance. Water sports abound – windsurfing, sailing, snorkeling, diving, and in early March, the Heineken Regatta. Relax on one of the 37 beaches, stroll Philipsburg’s boardwalk or pursue shops in Marigot.

Most people would rent a car to explore St. Maarten/St. Martin. Although frequently overcrowded, the roads are in pretty good condition, albeit winding and narrow. Be aware of some roundabouts, potholes, and speed bumps.

St. Maarten Beaches

All 37 St. Maarten beaches boast warm surf and gentle breeze, and all of them are open to the public. Each beach is unique: some bare and some bustling, some rocky and some refined, some good for sunbathing, and some for snorkeling. Whatever you have in mind, it’s there, including a clothing-optional  beach at the south end of Baie Orientale (Orient Bay), one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful beaches. You need to try several beaches, to pick up your favorite.

Although the best St. Maarten beaches, including Baie Orientale (Orient Bay), Mullet Bay, Anse Marcel, and Ilet Pinel, are lined with soft, white sand, some of the nicer beaches have small rocks, including Happy Bay and Baie des Peres. Atlantic-facing Le Galion has soft sand and gentle surf because it’s protected by a reef, but soft sand (in the case of Guana Bay and Cupecoy) can also be accompanied by heavy surf.

St. Maarten Dutch Side Beaches:

-Cupecoy Beach, Dawn Beach, Great Bay, Little Bay, Mullet Bay Beach, and Simpson Bay Beach.

Several of the best Dutch-side beaches are developed and have large-scale resorts. But others, including Simpson Bay and Cupecoy, have little development.

St Maarten French Side Beaches:

-Anse Heureuse (Happy Bay), Baie de Grand Case, Baie des Peres (Friars Bay), Baie Orientale (simply the best!), Baie Rouge (Red Bay), Le Galion, Ilet Pinel.

Almost all the French-side beaches, whether busy Baie Orientale or less busy Baie des Peres, have beach clubs and restaurants.
